Vacation – September 2011

This year we are taking our main vacation in the south western United States.  Earlier in the year Grace said that she wanted to go somewhere sunny and I said I wanted to go somewhere to relax for a while.  These two things came together in an interesting manner.

A few years ago Chris and Jackie Perryman, two former members of the Grange Fellowship who now live in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, introduced us to a website named, skyauction.com (thanks Chris and Jackie) and registered us to receive a regular email newsletter.  In one of these newsletters, published during the summer, an auction of a stay in a “villa” at a resort in Las Vegas attracted my attention.  I won the auction, obtaining a week in September, at less than one third of the price we would have paid had I gone to the resort’s website and booked on line.

We left our home on Tuesday 6 September and began our three day drive to the Westgate Flamingo Bay Resort.  On the first day we drove diagonally across Washington State from the NW corner to the SE corner and into Oregon where we stayed overnight in Pendleton.  On day two, we travelled due south through the high desert country of Oregon, crossed into Idaho and then into Nevada where we stayed overnight in the small community of Wells (pop 1,500).  Our third day took us through the Sierras along the Great Basin Highway.  The road rose to 7,300 feet at its highest point.  The scenery was very stark with rock formations that were spectacular in places.  Sometimes we were surrounded by moonscape type scenery.  We were very glad when, finally we reached journey’s end.

What can I say about Westgate Flamingo Bay?  It is basically one of the resort locations of an international time share organization, although we did not know that until we arrived here and we are, of course, not members of Westgate Resorts.  The villas are luxurious homes in a very pleasant and well designed gated community.  We have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves so far and are feeling very relaxed.  Our “home” here is well appointed for a self catered stay.  We have a spacious living room/dining room and fully equipped kitchen.  Our bedroom has a king size bed, shower and large Jacuzzi.  We have a plasma TV in the living room and another in the bedroom.  Also in the living room there is an RCA stereo system.  We  have every creature comfort we could desire and feel spoiled.

The following is a small selection from the photographs I have taken to give you an idea of what Westgate Flamingo Bay is like.
